Professor Trevor Waring AM - Patron

Professor Waring is a clinical psychologist with almost 40 years experience working in mental health, with both adults and young people.
He is a Conjoint Professor of Psychology at the University of Newcastle where he is also the Chancellor. He is also a Director of the Australian Psychological Society and Chair of the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council.
He was made a member of the Order of Australia in 2004 for his work in mental health and psychology.

Kay Sharp AM - Chair

Kay Sharp has many years experience in education and training of young people. 
She is executive director of Hunter Valley Training Company. She is also on the Board of WorldSkills and is a former member of the NSW Board of Vocational Education and Training. 
In 1990 Mrs Sharp was awarded Hunter Business Woman of the Year. In 1996 her contribution to services to education was recognised by her appointment as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).

Melinda Smith - HYMC Vice Chair

Melinda began her career as a cadet journalist with NBN Television 25 years ago and has also worked in public relations and radio. Along with presenting NBN News bulletins and working in a corporate marketing role, she also managed the NBN Cares project, a major HYMC partner. Melinda is now assisting the Hunter Valley Training Company with Corporate Communications and is pursuing some long awaited university studies.

Brian Doyle - Immediate Past HYMC Chairman and Hon Life Member

Well known legal specialist and father of four, Brian Doyle was the HYMC's first Chair from 2005 - 2009. 
Bryan worked tirelssly to help establish the HYMC, strengthen its networks and its services to members. His 45 years legal experience was invaluable in ensuring the HYMC had a robust constitution.
Mr Doyle has deservingly been made HYMC's first Honorary Life Member.

John Dickeson - Treasurer

Since retiring from Hunter Health after a 32-year career in the Pathology Service, John has been involved in a number of voluntary activities.  These range from projects to help improve the transition from working life to retirement, to assisting students at risk of dropping out of school without any clearly defined goals. John is an active mentor with Plan-It Youth which operates in high schools across the Hunter Region.

Katherine Heinrich - Secretary

Katherine Heinrich is a retired academic with significant policy and project management experience.
She attended Newcastle Girls’ High and studied mathematics at The University of Newcastle.  On completion of her studies she taught and did research at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver before becoming Special Assistant for Academic Planning.
In 1999 she was appointed Vice-President (Academic) at the University of Regina where she led the creation and funding of the Institut francais, developed a leadership program for department heads and established and oversaw a First Nation’s Student Scholarship Fund.  
Katherine was a member and president of Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS), member of the governing boards of the University of Northern British Columbia, the Youth Science Foundation of Canada, and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). 
In 1995 she was awarded the University of Newcastle Alumni Award and the Vancouver Women of Distinction Award for Education.
Katherine returned to Newcastle in 2006. She is currently volunteer director of Back to Back Galleries.


 
 

Damien Ward - Member of scholarships and conference committees

Damien is a retired corporate executive. He has many years experience in management, human resource management and marketing. In addition to being a HYMC committee member he is also an active member of the marketing, scholarships and conference sub committees. Damien also voluntarily mans the HYMC's 1300 number.

Judith Wood - Membership Officer

Judith has worked in education and has been involved in voluntary activities in developing countries. Since retiring from the Health Department, where she worked for a mental health education unit, Judith has been an active mentor with Plan-it Youth and has also been involved with literacy programs for primary students.

Ivan Gant - Committee Member

Ivan works for as Trade Schools/School Based Apprenticeships & Traineeships Coordinator for the Hunter Central Coast Region.


He lives in the Merriwa Cassilis area of the Upper Hunter and was previously Vocational Education Head Teacher at Merriwa Central School. In 2004 he was seconded to work in the role of Project Officer for the Upper Hunter Learning Cooperative where he established IP based videoconferencing and other online learning methods in Upper Hunter Schools to broaden their curriculums.


Ivan is passionate about ensuring all young people are provided with the right learning tools, setting and support systems to ensure engagement and the best learning outcomes.
